If you really want to succeed, go the extra mile and find a way that you know studying works for you. Being extra is good sometimes :) If you don’t know something, ASK FOR HELP! The tutors are so knowledgeable. Dedicate time to review your notes and do practice problems to make sure you really understand the concepts. Do things for your personal health too! Even though I had to sacrifice a lot of free time, don’t sacrifice sleep and exercise.

This week’s student spotlight features Joshua D. of MeriRiverside! He is currently a junior at Eleanor Roosevelt, but has already made quite an impact on his school. Joshua truly exemplifies someone who is passionate about giving back and getting involved with his local community.

Joshua first came to MeriEducation this past summer for SAT test prep. After prepping for 3 months over the summer, he took his second SAT this past October and increased his score by 200 points! Joshua attributes his score increase to taking diligent notes during his sessions and making sure he reviewed them! Finding a tutor that he really connected with made all the difference and always looked forward to his tutoring sessions with Arlene. Even after taking his SAT, Joshua continues to attend MeriEducation for academic tutoring to maintain his 4.16 GPA! His challenging classes this year include AP Psychology, AP Language/Composition, and AP Calculus AB.

By making the most of his summer, Joshua was able to finish his test prep and consequently dedicate his academic year to getting more involved at school. He is a public relations journalist for his school newspaper, The Roosevelt Review, and helped rebrand and redesign the online newspaper to increase awareness of local news and student engagement. Joshua is also the public relations manager for Eleanor Roosevelt High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). His goal is to create a welcoming and safe-space at his school by coordinating activities to promote student involvement and equality. As a PR specialist, Joshua expresses his creative side by designing their digital flyers for events.

In both programs, he works closely with school presidents and advisors to develop programs that have had a positive impact on his campus. Joshua is also very involved with his church and tries to spend his free time learning how to be a better person through charity. When he's not trying to save the world, you might find him running around town (yeah, he runs for FUN) or reading his massive book collection at home!
